Summary

Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, Research Professor of English Literature, University of Sussex。

The Wordsworth Classics' Shakespeare Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare's works。 The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal。

Romeo and Juliet is the world's most famous drama of tragic young love。 Defying the feud which divides their families, Romeo and Juliet enjoy the fleeting rapture of courtship, marriage and sexual fulfilment; but a combination of old animosities and new coincidences brings them to suicidal deaths。

This play offers a rich mixture of romantic lyricism, bawdy comedy, intimate harmony and sudden violence。 Long successful in the theatre, it has also generated numerous operas, ballets and films; and these have helped to make Romeo and Juliet perennially topical。

Romeo switched up too much for me and friar Lawrence gave me bad vibes。 Personally I think he was hired as a hitman by tybalt bc he loved romeo and thought if I can’t have him no one can

I finally read this well known Shakespeare's tragedy, and what can I say? it's really good。It was actually a fast and easy play despite the old English。 The characters are all enjoyable, especially Mercutio; he's a witty and funny and I like his bitterness side。 I was thinking about the meaning behind his name yesterday, as many Shakespeare's characters have hidden meaning: the Greek-Roman God of trade Mercury, or Hermes, was also known for his silver-tongued and cunning personality; Shakespeare I finally read this well known Shakespeare's tragedy, and what can I say? it's really good。It was actually a fast and easy play despite the old English。 The characters are all enjoyable, especially Mercutio; he's a witty and funny and I like his bitterness side。 I was thinking about the meaning behind his name yesterday, as many Shakespeare's characters have hidden meaning: the Greek-Roman God of trade Mercury, or Hermes, was also known for his silver-tongued and cunning personality; Shakespeare leaves nothing to change ! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Read for school over zoom and can we talk about the movie version where Juliet is just staring at Romeo bout to drink the poison and does NOTHING。 It’s not in the book - she’s pretty cool in the book tbh。

3。7 ⭐️ I found the romance more humorous than touching, but I respect Shakespeare and his use of iambic pentameter and symbolism。

This romantic tragedy centers around the perpetuating conflict between Verona, Italy's Capulets, and Montagues。 Amidst the tension between these two families, Romeo and Juliet, two star-struck lovers pursue romance after meeting at a masked ball。 Following their romantic journey, Romeo and Juliet face the death of family members, Romeo's banishment, and plots in the name of love。 This play's primary themes are the interaction between love, conflict, and family。 This romantic tragedy centers around the perpetuating conflict between Verona, Italy's Capulets, and Montagues。 Amidst the tension between these two families, Romeo and Juliet, two star-struck lovers pursue romance after meeting at a masked ball。 Following their romantic journey, Romeo and Juliet face the death of family members, Romeo's banishment, and plots in the name of love。 This play's primary themes are the interaction between love, conflict, and family。 。。。more

Play written by William Shakespeare, follows the lives of the Montagues and Capulets。 The two families feud throughout the play, but the children of opposing families fall for eachother。

In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy of two young lovers is shown。 Stuck in a time of war between their families, the two try and rejoice in their love。 However, the hate of their families results in an opposite and greater reaction than love。 Romeo and Juliet demonstrates how love can be blind and all stories don't have a happy ending。 Romeo and Juliet is a great play and I recommend it for all kids above twelve。 In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy of two young lovers is shown。 Stuck in a time of war between their families, the two try and rejoice in their love。 However, the hate of their families results in an opposite and greater reaction than love。 Romeo and Juliet demonstrates how love can be blind and all stories don't have a happy ending。 Romeo and Juliet is a great play and I recommend it for all kids above twelve。 。。。more

Admittedly, the plot had a lot of holes, and almost every character was frustratingly stupid。 But this is drama, man。 Cliché tragic love at its finest。 What can you ask for? This was written in the late 1500s。Now, there's a reason William Shakespeare is immortal, and that is showcased fantastically in this play。 It really is well written, literally speaking (we're not talking about plot or characters because I've already said most of it was not good in today's standards)。 The iambic pentameter f Admittedly, the plot had a lot of holes, and almost every character was frustratingly stupid。 But this is drama, man。 Cliché tragic love at its finest。 What can you ask for? The poetry in Romeo and Juliet is fascinatingly smooth, and he knows just which scenes to elaborate on, and which ones to cut short。 It truly is a literary masterpiece of the 15th century。Sure, there are things that could be written a lot better, but that's not the point。 Take in the time, the interests of the era, and Shakespeare's own personality。 Not everything can be the way you like it, or what is considered right and wrong today。 I'm looking at you, obvious, glaring pedophilia, and extreme lack of common sense。 Keep in mind, this is for drama, and so not every move made will be logical。 So, 4 stars :) 。。。more

Love is naturally the play's dominant and most important theme。 The play focuses on romantic love, specifically the intense passion that springs up at first sight between Romeo and Juliet。 In Romeo and Juliet, love is a violent, ecstatic, overpowering force that supersedes all other values, loyalties, and emotions。 Individual vs。 Society, Violence and The Theme of Death are included, Romeo and Juliet both make mistakes。 All the characters make poor decisions and in the end it comes back to them。 Love is naturally the play's dominant and most important theme。 The play focuses on romantic love, specifically the intense passion that springs up at first sight between Romeo and Juliet。 In Romeo and Juliet, love is a violent, ecstatic, overpowering force that supersedes all other values, loyalties, and emotions。 Individual vs。 Society, Violence and The Theme of Death are included, Romeo and Juliet both make mistakes。 All the characters make poor decisions and in the end it comes back to them。 。。。more

There's a part of me that wishes I could say that this play in no way lived up to the hype that made it a fundamental part of pop culture and I also wish I could say that I hate the clearly century old idea of two teens falling in love in a ballroom with just one look。 Yet here I am, saying that I was hooked on every word and appreciated the characters and the storyline, even if the clichés were so obvious that my first instinct was to gag。 The way that Romeo and Juliet, having seen each other o There's a part of me that wishes I could say that this play in no way lived up to the hype that made it a fundamental part of pop culture and I also wish I could say that I hate the clearly century old idea of two teens falling in love in a ballroom with just one look。 Yet here I am, saying that I was hooked on every word and appreciated the characters and the storyline, even if the clichés were so obvious that my first instinct was to gag。 The way that Romeo and Juliet, having seen each other once for 5 minutes and then got married the next day, only to commit mutual suicide after another few days is something that you didn't realise is happening until you finish the play, seen as the writing sucks you in so much。 I'd also like to thank Tybalt for basically being on cocaine and challenging anyone who he crossed to a duel; Mercutio and Benvolio for also just being the most annoying d*ckheads and the nurse for reminding me of Austen's Mrs Bennet, a lady who is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown (honourable mention to Friar Laurence for making an entrance praising all things good in the world and then basically committing double homicide)。 My only critique; it got a bit boring at the end, but maybe that's just because I knew what the finale was。 。。。more

Okay, apart from the fact that I literally had to drag myself through this book, and have been reading it since 3 whole months , everything is fine。 *rolls her eyes*I couldn't understand the meaning of the entire thing, obviously, but I did manage to get the main storyline, which is a lot more than I thought I would。 I absolutely loved the language, the story was alright, and I am just glad that I finally read something by Shakespeare。 Okay, apart from the fact that I literally had to drag myself through this book, and have been reading it since 3 whole months , everything is fine。 *rolls her eyes*I couldn't understand the meaning of the entire thing, obviously, but I did manage to get the main storyline, which is a lot more than I thought I would。 I absolutely loved the language, the story was alright, and I am just glad that I finally read something by Shakespeare。 。。。more
